 RESEARCH FOCUS

Neuropathic pain

We are interested in pain in peripheral nervous system disease. Painful nerve diseases are a major clinical problem. We use a well establish technique for assessing the nerve fibers carrying nociception and temperature sensations within the skin. This is a useful tool of investigation both in experimental animal models and in patients with nerve diseases.

Several clinical trials investigating innovative treatment for neuropathic pain are currently ongoing in our institution.

  • Evaluation of the analgesic effect of buprenorphine TDS administered as add on treatment in patients with chronic neuropathic pain inadequately controlled by conventional therapy.
  • Evaluation of the analgesic effect of electro-acupuncture in chronic neuropathic pain.
  • Evaluation of the analgesic activity of pregabalin in Burning Mouth Syndrome
  • Evaluation of the analgesic effects of transdermal lidocaine vs pregabalin.in patients with diabetic neuropathy and post-herpetic neuralgia

Experimental studies on the evaluation of opioids in animal models of chemotherapy induced peripheral are also currently ongoing
